Hair loss may be a clinical issue whereas it is a part of everyday life. Many people experience and concern for hair loss. It is important to know how much hair loss is normal and how much is not. One of the main concerns about hair loss is losing hair in the shower. In this post, I stated some information about hair loss in the shower and whether it is normal or not.

Is hair loss in the shower normal? Yes, hair shedding in the shower is normal. Many people experience it. On average people lose up to 150 strands a day. It results from the cyclic activity of growth and regrowth of hair. The amount of hair loss in the shower depends on your hair length and hair density. There is no need to worry about hair loss in the shower unless you recognize a difference with your scalp or lose an unusual amount of hair and notice that your hair doesn’t grow back. Hair loss is not a thing to be worried about but sometimes it can be a symptom of a more serious medical condition. Why We Lose Hair?

To know whether losing hair is perfectly normal or not, it is important to first understand the natural cycle of hair growth. Our hair is made up of 2 main parts which are the hair follicle and the hair shaft. The follicle contains the dermal papilla and the bulb. The dermal papilla supplies blood and nutrients whereas the bulb is the part where living cells divide to grow in order to build the hair shaft and forms the base of the hair follicle. On the other hand, these cells help to generate the hair shaft then the hair shaft is pushed out of the follicle thus we see appearing new hair growth through our scalp.

Three Phases of Hair Growth

  • The Growth Phase: This phase is called ‘’Anagen’’. If your hair follicles continue in this phase longer, the hair will grow longer. This lasts between 2 to 6 years.
  • The Regression Phase: This phase is a transitional stage and called ‘’Catagen’’. This stage lasts up to 2 weeks. At this stage, the hair detaches from the dermal papilla and the growth phase ends. Then the follicle shrinks and in order to keep the hair in the scalp, a bulb of keratin is formed.
  • The Resting Phase: This 3rd phase is called ‘’Telogen’’.  At this stage, the follicle stays inactive around 3 months. Then the ‘’Exogen” sub-phase starts, and the hair falls out.

The cycle continues around these phases and starts again and again. During this cycle on average people lose around 100 hairs per day. However, with 100,000 hairs on your head or so, this 0.1 % loss is unlikely to see unless the number of hair you lose start to significantly increase and a noticeable difference on your scalp begins. Hair loss can happen when the hair growth cycle is disrupted.

Some Tips on How to Stop Hair from Falling out in the Shower

If you think that you shed excessively in the shower, there are some tips you can do to stop hair from falling out.

  • Do Not Forget to Use Conditioner

Conditioner softens the hair, reduces tangling and hair frizz, prevents damage and breakage and helps to moisturize the hair. Without these benefits, your hair is more likely to fall out. A moisturized and soft hair makes it harder to fall out and keeping it hydrated helps to protect against possible breakage. Also, it is important to be sure that your conditioner is predominantly derived from natural ingredients

  • Do Not Use Too Hot Water

Hot water loosens hair follicles thus your hair becomes tend to fall off a lot easier. You should choose using lukewarm water instead of too hot water. If the hot water is a need then you may consider taking a hot bath instead of a hot shower.

  • Massage Your Scalp

Scratching the scalp hard while washing your hair loosen up the hair follicles and makes it easier to fall out more. Thereby you should massage your scalp gently. Massaging the roots strengthens and keeps active the hair follicles, contributes to hair growth and improve the hair structure.

  • Leave the Conditioner at Least Five Minutes

Leaving the conditioner at least five minutes before rinsing increases the effect of nourishment.

  • Do Not Clean Your Hair More Than Once

Reapplying shampoo to your hair does not make it getting cleaner but causes to strip the moisture of the hair and losing moisture makes your hair look duller and rougher.

  • Use a Shower Cap

If you lose a number of hairs more than 150 strands, then you may consider using a shower cap. Shower cap helps to control the water reaching your hair and with it, you don’t take more than what your hair needs.

Hair loss may be caused by several factors including, hereditary, stress, incorrect hair care, hormonal changes, medications, illnesses, etc. Thus it is important to first understand the cause for your hair loss and getting precautions according to it.  Natural and Homemade Treatments

Nourishing and softening your hair is important to prevent the hair loss. There are some treatments that you can prepare in your house:

Treatment with Essential Oils

Oiling your hair overnight will help you to nourish and moisturize your hair. application of oils such as coconut, almond, and castor seeds may promote hair growth in the long term. To prepare this treatment, you need to mix oils like coconut, castor, almond, etc. (whatever you want) into a bowl then apply it to your scalp and hair and start massaging your scalp with the oil about 10-20 minutes until your entire scalp absorbs the oil. Leave it overnight and wash the other day. To get better results, apply it 2-3 times a week.

If you don’t have time and do not want to leave it overnight, then you can heat the oil until it is slightly warm. Heating it will help scalp to absorb faster. After your massage section ends you can leave it around 30 minutes and wash your hair.

Treatment with Green Tea and Egg

To prepare it, take 1 egg yolk and put it into a bowl then add 2 tablespoons freshly prepared green tea into.  Mix until it gets creamy then apply it your scalp and hair and cover your hair with a shower cap or a towel. Leave it around 20-40 minutes then clean well with cool or lukewarm water and continue your hair cleansing routine.

Hair Loss Types According to the Sexes

Male Pattern Hair Loss

Male pattern hair loss is also known as androgenic alopecia. For men, hair loss may begin after puberty and proceed over the years. Most of the men with male pattern hair loss suffer from hereditary and may eventually become bald. However, it can be managed with medication or surgery.

Female Pattern Hair Loss

Most of the women experience this type of hair loss. Female pattern hair loss type is generally a part of aging. However, it may begin after puberty.  strikingly thinning of hair may be caused by female pattern hair loss it may lead to baldness which is very rare.


Is Hair Loss Normal?

Losing up to 100- 150 hair strands a day is perfectly normal. The cyclic activity of growth of hair is the reason for this hair loss. So it is very natural and normal. Hair loss is not a thing to be worried about unless you lose an unusual amount of hair and there is a huge difference with your scalp. It is also important to analyze whether your hair grows back or not. To analyze if your shed is normal, you can take about 50-60 hairs and pull. If you shed between 5 and 8 hairs, it is very normal but an excess of 20 hairs, you may consult a doctor. However, even if you lose quite a bit of hair it is generally not a concern. It can be a side-effect or caused by stress and lack of vitamins. Curing this type of hair loss is easy however consulting a doctor is always important.
